Assembly

Assembly
by C3 Visiting Artist Lauren Cross
September–December 2018

Assembly was a collaborative quilt-like work by former C3 Visiting Artist Lauren Cross composed of visitors' responses to questions about common materials and identity. Using brown paper bags and digitally fabricated fibers, Cross’s art reflects the connections between cultural history, art making, and the significance of materials. Incorporating topics ranging from skin color to cooking, Cross’s process is inspired by creative practices within African American culture such as quilting and furniture making. In Assembly, visitors shared their interpretations, memories, and ideas. These individual pieces of brown paper became a collective gathering of culture and thought.
